When you open your closet, do you brace yourself and prepare for impact? If your closet is packed to the gills and feels more like an overflowing thrift shop than a calm boutique, you’re definitely not alone. I see this all the time - clients keeping every item they own jammed into one space, no matter the season. Heavy parka in July? Flip-flops in January? It’s more common than you’d think! But not desirable, despite our constantly shifting seasons in Chicago...

The honest truth: a closet that tries to do it all, all year long, ends up doing nothing well. That’s why I’m such a fan of the seasonal swap system. Not only does it free up space and make getting dressed less stressful, it helps you shop smarter, take better care of your clothes, and, maybe best of all, actually enjoy stepping into your closet (instead of ducking to avoid an avalanche of scarves).

Let’s break it down step by step.

Step 1: Declutter Before You Rotate

Before you even think about packing away those summer tanks or sandals, take everything out and sort. Make two simple categories: what you wear now, and what’s out of season.

As you go, ask yourself:

  • Did I actually wear this in the last season?

  • Do I love it, or am I just keeping it because it was expensive, on sale, or fits the “someday” version of myself?

The hard truth: Clothes hold memories and emotions - wedding guest dresses, “I might fit into these again someday” jeans, that sweater you never wear but feel guilty donating. But if it’s not serving you in this season of life, it’s costing you space and mental energy. Letting go doesn’t erase the memory or mean you failed, it just makes room for what makes you feel confident and comfortable today.

Pro Organizer Tip: Donate or consign items right away - don’t let that bag sit in your hallway or trunk for months. (No shame, we’ve all been there.)

Step 2: Store Off-Season Items Properly

Once you’ve decided what stays and what goes, pack away the off-season stuff.

  • Use breathable bins or fabric storage bags. (Skip plastic if you can, or make sure it’s stored somewhere climate-controlled.)

  • Label clearly - no one wants to dig through mystery bins in six months. Start simple (“Off-Season Clothes”) and add detail if you need to.

  • Keep a bin or two for those “in-between” pieces you wear during the transition months.

  • Toss in a cedar block or lavender sachet to keep things fresh and pest-free.

Think of it as sending your clothes on a little vacation until they’re needed again. And pick a storage spot that works with your space - under the bed, top closet shelf, maybe even the garage or attic if your climate allows.

Step 3: Organize the Current Season’s Wardrobe

Now comes the fun part - setting up your closet for the current season! Only keep what you’ll actually wear. Group like with like: pants with pants, dresses with dresses, tops with tops. Or, if you’re a visual person, arrange by color and create a closet rainbow you actually want to wear. There’s no perfect method, just the one that makes getting dressed feel simple (and maybe even a little joyful).

Pro Organizer Tip: Invest in slim, velvet, non-slip hangers. They create a uniform look, save space, and keep your clothes off the floor. Plus, matching hangers instantly give your closet that boutique feel, without a boutique price tag.

Step 4: Maintain the Rotation

With every season change, repeat the process: declutter, store, and rotate. It gets easier every time, and your closet will thank you.

Bonus: You’ll spot gaps in your wardrobe sooner, so you can make intentional purchases that actually fit your lifestyle - no more impulse buys that end up gathering dust.

The Takeaway

When you open your closet and see only what works for you right now, you save time, reduce stress, and might even find yourself smiling at your sweater collection instead of sighing at the chaos.

Life’s too short to dig through piles every morning. You deserve a closet that supports you, not one that stresses you out! And if you need help, you know where to find us 😊
