You know that feeling when you crawl into bed, ready to call it a night, and suddenly remember there’s a mountain of dishes in the sink or your craft supplies scattered around like confetti? Here’s a gentle, judgment-free ritual I love (and preach, even if I don’t always practice): putting the house to bed. It’s not about perfection—it’s about giving yourself a little leg up for the morning.
Why “Put the House to Bed”?
Think of it as a gift to your future self. Waking up to a tidy-ish space means less scrambling, fewer lost shoes, and a calmer start to your day. Plus, it only takes a few minutes—promise!
Quick & Practical Tips

Run the Dishwasher: My nightly non-negotiable is running the dishwasher before bed. (Pro tip: If you’re lucky, someone else might unload it in the morning!)
<-- The Basket Sweep: In theory, I love grabbing a basket and making a quick lap to gather stray items and return them to their homes. In reality? It happens… sometimes. Progress over perfection!
Laundry Round-Up: Toss dirty clothes in the hamper. If you’re feeling ambitious, sort by color—but honestly, just getting them off the floor is a win.
Mail & Papers: Stack or corral today’s mail so it doesn’t multiply overnight. (Pro tip: put them somewhere where cats can't reach them to chew on or play with!)
Shoes in Their Spots: Shoes back in cubbies, baskets, or by the door. Your morning self will thank you.
Clear Counters: Give kitchen and bathroom counters a quick wipe. No need for sparkle, just a reset.
Pet & Kid Gear: Scoop up toys and gear into a basket or bin.
Make It Fun, Not a Chore
Set a timer for 5–10 minutes. Put on a favorite song or podcast. If you miss a night (or three), no guilt—life happens! Some nights, the house stays up late. That’s okay. Celebrate what you do, not what you miss. Remember: every little reset is a kindness to yourself. Sweet dreams—for you and your home!
